Your first kiss is supposed to be sweet. Ours was baptized in fire.

I was the new girl trying to find her place.

Landon was the brooding neighbor I tutored over the summer.

I didn’t know he was a legend at Black Mountain Academy.

I didn’t know they worshipped him like a religion.

But I fell for him before I knew those things.

To me, he was just the tortured soul who drew me in like a magnet.

And then he did something so unspeakable, so unforgivable, it shattered me.

I ran away then because I was weak, but I’ve shed my tears.

He stole my heart and my dignity, and I’m here to take it back.

The only problem is… he’s not giving it up without a fight.

**** My Review ****

Young Adults / High School romances and I never have had the greatest relationship, they simply didn’t live up to my expectations, but this book here pulled me into the story right away and left me sleep-deprived and groggy the next morning. I devoured it in one sitting, and I wanted more.

Landon and Kail’s story is one gripping friends to enemies to lovers high school drama that will push you to turn the pages in eagerness. A story that will make you angry and delighted at the same time, it will make you laugh and swoon, maybe a little cliché at certain moments, but still a story that will grab your attention and will not leave you indifferent.

The push and pull relationship, the hot and cold moments, the sassy back and forth…… I felt like I was watching a high-profile boxing match. He, famous, rich and extremely handsome against her – the ordinary, curvy outsider. What will happen when the two collide? Landon – the dream of all the girls on campus, and Kail – his only dream. Stone to stone, body to body, and sparks of passion that fill every word, every perfectly fitted description and sentence, that reflects their magnetic attraction. And the emotions are so strong that they just drip from the pages. And does it matter who wins when they both lose?

Although the focus of the book is on the sweet and sour romance of Landon and Kailani, the author skillfully explores delicate topics such as the cause-and-effect relationship of reckless actions, the pain of losing a part of yourself in a futile battle to prove and persevere , the impact of wealth and status on society, the use of children as puppets in a puppet show … many subtle descriptions and details that make this book an absolute perfection. The way the author does not hold anything back is absolutely masterful.

Without pardon, she strikes us with the truth wrapped under the notion of some crazy, young years … The weight of all that hatred and intrigue is so deeply  intertwined throughout this story, as well as the fact that a seemingly naive teenage obsession has the power to destroy lives. Layer by layer, as we read, we become more and more involved in this extremely emotional story, which will remain in our thoughts even after reading.

I definitely didn’t expect all of this, but this book is extremely well-written, with perfect proportion of drama and angst to keep the readers at the edge, but enough sweet and swoony moments to delight them at the same time. Telling the story through dual narrative, the author allows the readers complete insight into the main characters who along with the secondary add to the wholeness of the book.

The exciting love story of Landon and Kail is a genuine mixture of emotions. Infatuation, madness, anger, desire, rage, love … …everything is so perfectly balanced in order to make this book my absolute favorite YA romance of the year. We definitely had a click from moment one.
